Nello, the iconic celeb-magnet restaurant that closed its doors last year after 25 years on uptown Madison Avenue, is making a comeback in a new location in Midtown Manhattan. Real estate mogul and former hot dog franchise king Thomas Makkos has signed a lease for the new Nello at 62 W. 55th St., part of SL Green’s recently modernized 1350 Sixth Ave. office tower.
The original Nello restaurant, although bearing the name of Nello Balan, was actually run by Makkos following a split between the partners in 2015. The new Nello will occupy 2,300 square feet on the ground floor, 1,500 square feet below ground, and will feature a spacious sidewalk patio. Located between Fifth and Sixth avenues, the new Nello will be in the company of renowned eateries such as Alain Ducasse’s Benoit Bistro and media-favorite Michael’s.
According to Meridian Retail Leasing president James Famularo, who brokered the deal, Nello is an institution that needed a prime location to reflect its reputation. Makkos is aiming to attract back Nello’s many celebrity regulars, including the likes of J.Lo, Uma Thurman, Harrison Ford, Pierce Brosnan, and Jennifer Aniston. However, one notable absentee from the guest list is President Trump, who was reportedly a frequent customer and courted Melania at the restaurant.
The old Nello was known for its extravagant prices, with dishes like a $55 asparagus plate. It was a hotspot for paparazzi hoping to catch glimpses of celebrities and even made headlines during the 2020 COVID lockdown for violating state rules. To enhance its image, Makkos adorned the outdoor seats with giant red teddy bears wearing masks, which became a popular fixture even after the pandemic subsided.
While Famularo did not disclose the exact rent for the new Nello, sources suggest it falls in the range of $250 to $300 per square foot. With its prime location and storied history, the new Nello is poised to reclaim its status as a must-visit destination for the elite and influential in New York City.
