Sesame Street Finds a New Home on Netflix
The beloved children’s educational series, Sesame Street, is making a big move from Max to Netflix. The deal between Sesame Workshop, the producers of the show, and Netflix comes after Warner Bros. Discovery decided not to renew their contract to distribute the show on Max (formerly HBO Max). Warner’s decision was influenced by a shift in strategy for their streaming service.
A spokesperson for Max expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Sesame Street but explained that they needed to focus on content for adults and families based on consumer feedback. Despite this, Sesame Street will still be available on Max until 2027, with the 55th season set to premiere on the platform.
Old seasons of Sesame Street will be coming to Netflix later this year, with season 56 debuting on the streaming service. Specific release dates have yet to be announced. According to Sesame Workshop, new episodes of Sesame Street will also be available on PBS stations and PBS Kids platforms in the US on the same day they release on Netflix.
Kay Wilson Stallings, from Sesame Workshop, shared that Sesame Street will undergo a reimagining on Netflix with longer segments and more sophisticated stories. The show will also introduce a new animated series called Tales From 123, along with the return of fan-favorite segments like Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck. Additionally, Netflix will develop video games for Sesame Street, including Sesame Street Mecha Builders.
While viewers in the US can enjoy daily episodes of Sesame Street on PBS stations and PBS Kids platforms, the partnership between Netflix, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting will ensure that children worldwide can continue to benefit from the show’s educational content. This unique public-private partnership aims to help children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder through the timeless lessons of Sesame Street.
