Serie A Matches Postponed Following Pope Francis’ Passing

The football matches scheduled for Monday in Italy’s Serie A have been postponed following the passing of Pope Francis.

The Vatican confirmed on Monday morning that Pope Francis had passed away at the age of 88. The Pontiff had recently been discharged from the hospital after a five-week stay for treatment of an infection.

The four Serie A matches affected by the postponement are Torino vs. Udinese, Cagliari vs. Fiorentina, Genoa vs. Lazio, and Parma vs. Juventus. Originally scheduled for Easter Monday, these matches will now be played on Wednesday, April 23, kicking off at 17:30 BST.

Pope Francis, who became the leader of the Catholic Church in 2013, was known for his love of football. He was a devoted fan of Argentine club San Lorenzo.

Following the news of his passing, several Serie A clubs expressed their condolences to the Pope.

“A sorrowful loss for our city and the entire globe,” a statement from Roma read.
