Ngubeni granted bail after court appearance
Well-known actress and casting director Nolwazi Ngubeni has been released on R5,000 bail following her appearance at the Brixton Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg today.
Ngubeni is facing allegations of financial misconduct related to her work with Durban-based film production company Rhythm World Productions, Joburg-based Masakhane Casting Agency, and Make Your Art (Pty) Ltd in March 2024.
Charges against Ngubeni
The charges against Ngubeni include cyber forgery, fraud, theft, and uttering – the act of passing off a forged document to deceive another party.
The NPA Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, stated that Ngubeni was hired as a casting director by Rhythm World and allegedly failed to pass on payments received for her services.
Allegations of theft
Reports suggest that Ngubeni may have pocketed R700,000 from the production of the TV series “Queen Modjadji” while serving as its casting director. Supporting actors on the show claimed they were not paid while Ngubeni allegedly paid herself extra.
Legal action was reportedly taken by the production company after negotiations for repayment stalled. Ngubeni, a recipient of a South African Film & Television Award, maintains her innocence in the matter.
The actress is scheduled to appear in court again on 26 September for further investigations into the case.
This latest development follows Ngubeni’s initial court appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 26 March.
