The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is set to grill four U.S. mayors on their cities’ immigration policies this Wednesday. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been summoned to address their migrant sanctuary policies.
Johnson and Wu have staunchly defended their cities’ restrictions that prohibit local authorities from collaborating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. On the other hand, Adams, who is facing corruption charges, has shown a willingness to cooperate with the Trump administration. Federal prosecutors recently dropped the corruption charges against Adams, which were announced in a federal indictment last September.
Chicago’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, criticized federal lawmakers for their inaction during the influx of migrants into the country, calling it unprecedented. When asked who he sought advice from before facing the House committee, Johnson mentioned seeking guidance from various individuals, including former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and U.S. Rep. Danny Davis.
While Johnson is in Washington to testify, Chicago Republicans are urging officials from the Trump administration to visit the city. ChicagoRED Executive Director Osiris King called for officials like border czar Tom Homan, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate alleged wasteful spending in the city.
The Illinois Republican Party labeled Johnson as the “most unpopular man in America” and posed questions regarding his stance on deporting criminals from Chicago and his willingness to lose federal funding for not cooperating with the federal government.
As the hearing approaches, the spotlight is on the mayors and their immigration policies, with each facing scrutiny and tough questions from lawmakers. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
