The South African women’s 4x400m quartet made history at the World Athletics Relays championship in Guangzhou by setting a national record of 3:28.01 in their first-round race. The team, comprised of Shirley Nekhubui, Hannah van Niekerk, Precious Molepo, and Zeney Geldenhuys, showcased their talent despite challenging wet conditions.
This record-breaking performance surpassed their previous national record of 3:28.30, which was achieved in Pretoria earlier this year. The women’s team’s impressive display secured their spot in the final, where they will have the opportunity to compete for further success on Sunday.
In a similar display of excellence, the South African men’s 4x100m quartet also shone on the track. Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana, and Akani Simbine won their first-round heat in a time of 37.84 seconds, earning them a place as the fastest qualifiers for the final alongside Japan.
The success of both the women’s 4x400m and men’s 4x100m teams means they have qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year. Additionally, the South African men’s and mixed 4x400m teams will also be competing in the medal contests on the final day of the World Relays.
In the men’s 4x400m heats, Mthi Mthimkulu, Udeme Okon, Lythe Pillay, and Udeme Okon delivered a strong performance, winning their race in a time of 3:00.00. Furthermore, in the mixed 4x400m event, Nekhubui, Geldenhuys, Tumisang Shezi, and Leendert Koekemoer secured second place in their heat with a time of 3:13.79.
The South African teams have showcased their talent and determination at the World Athletics Relays championship, setting the stage for an exciting and successful campaign in both the current competition and the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
