Joel Souza, the man behind the film “Rust,” has expressed deep regret and sorrow over his involvement in the project. In a candid interview with The Guardian, Souza revealed that he wishes he had never written the movie in the first place. This sentiment comes in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred during the filming of “Rust” in 2021.
During a scene shoot, a prop gun held by actor Alec Baldwin was inadvertently loaded with live ammunition, resulting in a fatal accident. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed, and Souza himself was injured when the bullet passed through Hutchins’ chest and lodged in his shoulder. The physical injury has left Souza with limited mobility and occasional intense pain, likened to being set on fire.
Reflecting on the events that led to the tragedy, Souza acknowledged a series of bad decisions that culminated in the devastating outcome. Initially hesitant to continue working on the film after the incident, Souza eventually decided to complete it at the request of Hutchins’ family, who wanted to see her final work brought to fruition.
A settlement reached with Hutchins’ estate, Baldwin, and the production company ensures that a portion of the film’s earnings will go to Hutchins’ family. Additionally, Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, agreed to executive-produce the remainder of the Western as part of the agreement.
Despite the somber circumstances surrounding the film, “Rust” premiered at the Camerimage Film Festival in Poland in November 2024 to positive reviews. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Souza acknowledged the emotional weight carried by the cast and crew throughout the production.
