Russian Ballet Dancer Critic of War in Ukraine Dies in Mysterious Fall

Vladimir Shklyarov, a renowned Russian ballet dancer and vocal critic of Russia’s war in Ukraine, tragically fell to his death from the fifth floor of a building in a mysterious incident. The 39-year-old, who was a principal dancer at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, plunged around 60 feet to the ground on Saturday.

Initially, Russian authorities attributed the fall to the painkillers Shklyarov was taking before a complex spinal surgery, labeling it as an accident. However, given his outspoken criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin’s crackdown on dissent, many are questioning the official explanation.

Shklyarov had taken to Facebook in 2022 to express his opposition to the war in Ukraine, calling for peace and condemning the violence against civilians. Despite the risks associated with speaking out against the government, he remained steadfast in his beliefs, stating that politicians should prioritize peaceful negotiations over conflict.

The tragic incident involving Shklyarov is not the first of its kind in Russia, where critics of Putin have faced suspicious deaths. Several individuals, including politicians, journalists, and Putin allies, have met untimely ends under dubious circumstances, raising concerns about foul play and government involvement.

Shklyarov’s untimely death has left the ballet community and fans mourning the loss of an exceptional artist. His career at the Mariinsky Theater spanned over two decades, during which he showcased his talent in classical ballets such as Giselle, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. His grace and passion on stage captivated audiences worldwide, earning him accolades and recognition as an Honored Artist of Russia.

The American Ballet Theater, where Shklyarov had performed as a guest artist, paid tribute to him, acknowledging his profound impact on their stage and the hearts of all who had the privilege of witnessing his performances. His legacy as a remarkable dancer and advocate for peace will endure, shining brightly through the beauty he brought to the world.

While the circumstances surrounding Shklyarov’s death remain unclear, his memory lives on through his artistry and unwavering commitment to promoting peace and understanding in a tumultuous world.
