Rivers Angels Beat Nasarawa Amazons To Retain Women’s President Federation Cup

Rivers Angels Clinch Tenth Women’s Title in 2025 Finals

Rivers Angels emerged victorious in their quest for the tenth women’s title at the 2025 finals held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, on Saturday. The thrilling match saw the Port Harcourt team secure the championship after a tense battle against the Nasarawa Amazons.

In a game that ended 2-2 after regular time, Rivers Angels showed resilience and determination as they clinched the title with a 4-2 victory on penalties. The match started with the Nasarawa Amazons taking an early lead, with Rukayat Shobowale capitalizing on a stray ball inside the Rivers Angels’ area to give her team the advantage just seven minutes into the game. Shobowale doubled the lead ten minutes later, putting the Lafia-based team in a commanding position going into halftime.

However, Rivers Angels staged a remarkable comeback in the second half, with Taiwo Ajibade narrowing the gap with a goal in the 57th minute. The Port Harcourt team continued to press forward, and their efforts paid off when former Flamingos midfielder Taiwo Afolabi equalized just five minutes later, sending the game into a tense penalty shootout.

The shootout saw both teams battling to gain the upper hand, but it was Rivers Angels who held their nerve and emerged victorious. Esther Adesoji’s miss in the first kick gave the Port Harcourt team an early advantage, and goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi’s crucial save from Ayatsea Hembafan’s attempt further solidified their position. Rivers Angels sealed the victory with a 4-2 win on penalties, with the goalkeeper stepping up to convert the final kick and secure their tenth championship.

This historic win adds to Rivers Angels’ impressive record, with previous victories in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2024. The team’s consistency and determination have cemented their status as one of the powerhouses in women’s football in Nigeria.

Overall, the 2025 finals showcased the talent and resilience of both teams, with Rivers Angels emerging as deserving champions. The thrilling match will be remembered as a testament to the skill and passion of women’s football in Nigeria.
