Richard D. Parsons, a trailblazing figure in the business world and a prominent black businessman, passed away at the age of 76. Parsons had a distinguished career, serving as a top executive in major companies such as Time Warner and Citigroup, and playing a crucial role in navigating them through challenging times.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Parsons was known for his strategic leadership and ability to turn around struggling companies. He took the helm of Time Warner during a tumultuous period following its merger with AOL, helping the company reduce its debt and achieve sustainable growth. His tenure as CEO was instrumental in reshaping the company’s trajectory.

Parsons later played a key role in guiding Citigroup through the financial crisis, serving as Chairman during a time of immense challenges for the banking giant. His leadership was praised for leaving Citigroup in a stronger position than when he took over. He was known for his unwavering commitment to his team, exemplifying the value of standing by them in tough times.

In addition to his corporate achievements, Parsons also made significant contributions to the sports world. When the NBA’s Clippers faced a scandal over racism, Parsons was appointed as the interim chief executive to provide steady and reassuring leadership. His presence was lauded for bringing stability to the team during a period of adversity.

Throughout his career, Parsons was a vocal advocate for social issues and diversity in the business world. He often found himself as the only black executive in boardrooms and used his platform to speak out on important issues. His commitment to social justice was evident in his actions, such as his involvement following the death of George Floyd in 2020.
