Brazilian Forward Lucas Ribeiro Shines in Sundowns’ Victory Over Pirates

In a highly-anticipated top-of-the-table clash in the South African Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns showed their dominance with a commanding 4-1 win over Orlando Pirates. The match, played in front of a packed crowd of 50,000 in Pretoria, saw Sundowns extend their lead at the summit of the league table to nine points as they aim for an eighth consecutive league title.

On the other hand, Orlando Pirates continue to wait for their first championship since 2012, with their title hopes taking a blow after the defeat to the reigning champions.

Lucas Ribeiro, the talented Brazilian forward, stole the show with a stunning solo goal in the 27th minute. Picking up the ball deep in Sundowns’ half, Ribeiro showcased his dribbling skills as he weaved his way into the Pirates’ box before unleashing a precise shot past the goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Ribeiro wasn’t done yet, as he added a second goal in the 59th minute to further solidify Sundowns’ lead. Despite a brief response from Deon Hotto, Teboho Mokoena sealed the victory with a powerful strike from outside the box in the 78th minute, highlighting the team’s dominant performance.

Reflecting on his exceptional display, Ribeiro acknowledged the tough challenge posed by Orlando Pirates. “It was a difficult match against very good opponents. I am very, very happy to have scored twice, especially with the quality of the first goal,” Ribeiro shared with AFP.

League Standings and Rejuvenated Magesi

With his brace, Ribeiro now leads the league scoring charts with nine goals, three ahead of his Sundowns teammate Iqraam Rayners. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Magesi secured a vital 2-0 win over Cape Town City, ending a 12-match winless streak and climbing off the foot of the standings.
