Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, continues its tradition of celebrating Africa’s leading design talent with a new exhibition curated by RESERVOIR. Titled “Against the Bias: Unravelling Material Codes,” this collection showcases the work of 13 esteemed contemporary artists from across the continent. The exhibition is set to grace the walls of this iconic hotel until February 2025, offering guests a glimpse into the vibrant world of African art and fashion.
Building on the success of the recent CONFECTIONS X COLLECTIONS exhibition, which highlighted slow African fashion, “Against the Bias” delves deeper into the intersection of fashion, art, and identity. Curated by RESERVOIR founders Heinrich Groenewald and Shona van der Merwe, the exhibition explores the dual meaning of the term “bias” in the context of garment-making and social constructs. By presenting artists who challenge conventional structures and push boundaries, the collection invites viewers to rethink the role of fashion as a form of self-expression and cultural commentary.
The artworks featured in “Against the Bias” span a wide range of mediums, including photography, sculpture, woodwork, tapestry, and painting. Artists such as Lakin Ogunbanwo, Tangeni Kambudu, Athi-Patra Ruga, and Michael Taylor bring their unique perspectives to the theme of materiality and identity. Ogunbanwo’s Nigerian bridal portraits, for example, delve into the complexities of class and tradition, while Kambudu’s use of mirror and glass explores themes of ancestry and heritage.
RESERVOIR’s collaboration with Mount Nelson creates a dynamic and immersive experience for guests, with artworks displayed throughout the hotel’s public spaces. From the Planet Bar to the elegant lounge where Afternoon Tea is served, visitors can engage with the diverse narratives and artistic expressions on offer. The exhibition not only showcases the talent of Africa’s contemporary artists but also fosters a dialogue between cultures, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.
Tiago Moraes Sarmento, Managing Director of Belmond Southern Africa, describes the exhibition as a fitting conclusion to Mount Nelson’s 125th-anniversary celebrations. By providing a platform for Africa’s artistic talent, the hotel aims to pave the way for future collaborations and creative partnerships. Guests are invited to visit Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, and experience “Against the Bias: Unravelling Material Codes” firsthand until February 2025.
