South African President Cyril Ramaphosa Advocates for Multilateralism at G20 Finance Summit

During the recent Cape Town G20 finance summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a powerful speech highlighting the importance of maintaining a strong multilateral approach in the face of global challenges. Ramaphosa expressed concerns about the “erosion of multilateralism,” emphasizing its role in promoting global growth and stability.

One of the key points raised by Ramaphosa was the need for a robust, rules-based order to address heightened geopolitical tensions effectively. He stressed the significance of innovative financing and insurance solutions to tackle climate-induced disasters in vulnerable nations, calling for collective action to mitigate the impact of such crises.

The summit saw the notable absence of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, following a similar snub by US Secretary of State Mark Rubio in the previous week. Rubio’s decision to skip the event was reportedly linked to accusations of Pretoria’s “anti-Americanism.” Despite these tensions, Ramaphosa’s stance on multilateralism remained unwavering.

It is evident that Ramaphosa’s advocacy for multilateralism and cooperation resonates with the global community, emphasizing the need for solidarity in addressing pressing issues. His call for a rules-based order and innovative solutions reflects a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and sustainable future for all nations.
