Racket-Smashing Medvedev Suffers Shock Wimbledon Exit

Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev faced an unexpected first-round exit at Wimbledon on Monday, falling to France’s Benjamin Bonzi in four sets.

Medvedev, who had reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in the previous two years, was unable to continue his successful run at the All England Club as he was defeated by the 64th-ranked Bonzi. The French player secured a 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 victory over the ninth-seeded Medvedev after a grueling three-hour and seven-minute match on Court Two, played under scorching conditions.

For Medvedev, this marks the first time in seven appearances at Wimbledon that he has failed to progress beyond the first round, a disappointing result for the talented player.

The 29-year-old Russian, who claimed the US Open title in 2021, has faced challenges at Grand Slam tournaments this year, with early exits at the Australian Open (second round) and the French Open (first round) preceding his disappointing performance at Wimbledon.

In the previous year, Medvedev had a strong showing at Wimbledon, defeating top seed Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals before bowing out to reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
