The Opening of “Purpose” at the Helen Hayes Theater
The Helen Hayes Theater recently hosted the official opening of “Purpose,” a compelling new play by acclaimed playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by the talented Phylicia Rashad in her Broadway directorial debut. After a successful world premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company in March 2024, this family drama has made its way to Broadway, offering audiences a thought-provoking exploration of Black American political legacy, faith, and familial duty.
“Purpose” delves into the lives of the Jasper family, a prominent dynasty in Black American politics with a long history of civil rights activism and political influence. However, beneath their facade of power lies a web of secrets and unresolved issues. The narrative unfolds when Nazareth, the youngest son, returns home with an unexpected guest, prompting the Jaspers to confront their identity, faith, and the burden of their prestigious legacy. Jacobs-Jenkins, known for his works like “Appropriate” and “The Comeuppance,” skillfully weaves a story that serves as both a poignant family portrait and a commentary on Black political power in America.
The Broadway production features an exceptional cast led by LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Harry Lennix, along with Steppenwolf ensemble members Jon Michael Hill, Glenn Davis, and Alana Arenas, and Tony Award winner Kara Young. The chemistry and depth of the cast members, who previously starred in the play’s acclaimed premiere at Steppenwolf, bring an added layer of authenticity to the Broadway stage.
Under Rashad’s direction, “Purpose” has already received high praise, earning three Equity Jeff Awards in 2024. With a limited 19-week engagement running until July 6, 2025, the production promises to engage Broadway audiences with its blend of humor, heart, and raw honesty.
“Purpose” resonates as a celebration of Black storytelling and a reflection on the complexities of legacy for audiences across the African diaspora and beyond. Produced by a powerhouse team, the play highlights the importance of Black voices in contemporary theater.
To ensure accessibility, “Purpose” offers rush ticket policies. Digital Rush tickets can be purchased via the TodayTix app for $45 on the day of each performance, while in-person rush tickets are available at the Hayes Box Office. These tickets are limited and sold on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing more people to experience this groundbreaking production.
