Prosecutors Seek More Time in Attempted Trump Assassination Case After Hurricanes

The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has shaken the nation, with federal prosecutors in Florida seeking a brief delay in court deadlines due to the aftermath of two hurricanes that have ravaged the state. The accused, a man named Routh from Hawaii, is facing charges of stalking Trump for a month before setting up a sniper’s nest near the Trump International golf course in West Palm Beach.

Prosecutors have charged Routh with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, and attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. Despite pleading not guilty, evidence presented by the FBI paints a troubling picture of Routh’s intentions and preparations.

An FBI agent detailed the inside of Routh’s sniper nest, where he allegedly waited for hours with a scoped rifle. The nest, located near the sixth hole of the golf course, contained bags with plates designed to stop small arms fire, as well as an SKS rifle with a scope. A fingerprint on the rifle was matched to Routh, further incriminating him in the assassination attempt.

Prosecutors revealed that Routh had been planning the attack for months, with a handwritten list of dates and venues where Trump was expected to appear found in his possession. Additionally, a note left by Routh offered a substantial sum of money to anyone willing to “finish the job” of assassinating Trump.

Despite Routh’s attorney dismissing the incident as a publicity stunt, the seriousness of the situation cannot be understated. A U.S. Secret Service agent spotted the rifle before Routh fled the scene in a Nissan SUV. Cellphone records indicated that Routh had been camped out near the golf course for several hours before authorities apprehended him on Interstate 95.

The gravity of the situation underscores the importance of maintaining security measures for public figures, especially in a politically charged climate. The attempted assassination serves as a stark reminder of the threats faced by those in positions of power, and the need for vigilant protection against such acts of violence.
