President John Dramani Mahama Removes Chief Justice from Office

President John Dramani Mahama has made the decision to remove the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, from office with immediate effect. This action is in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

Reason for Removal

The decision to remove the Chief Justice follows the submission of a report by a Committee of Inquiry that was established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori. After carefully examining the petition and the evidence presented, the Committee concluded that grounds of stated misbehavior under Article 146(1) had been established, leading to the recommendation of the Chief Justice’s removal.

Constitutional Requirement

As per constitutional requirement, the President is obligated to act in line with the Committee’s recommendation. This decision marks a significant development in the judiciary and underscores the importance of upholding the principles of justice and accountability.
