President Akufo-Addo Commissions Ultra-Modern Market in Akim Oda
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently commissioned a state-of-the-art market in Akim Oda, located in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern region. The event was met with great enthusiasm from the local community, including Chiefs and residents.
The construction of the modern market was a response to a devastating fire incident in September 2021 that destroyed the old market, causing significant loss to traders and displacing many individuals. The new market, funded by the District Assemblies Common Fund, is part of the $100 Million Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program (GSCSP).
Supported by the World Bank through the Urban Development Grant (UDG), the project aims to enhance urban infrastructure in 25 municipalities across Ghana.
The newly built market features multi-story buildings housing over 250 lockable stores, as well as essential facilities like a clinic, a banking hall, and a creche. This modernization initiative is set to provide a more conducive and secure trading environment for local entrepreneurs.
During the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo commended the efforts of the District Assemblies Common Fund Secretariat and its Administrator, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, for their role in realizing this significant development project.
