Pope Francis Continues Recovery from Pneumonia in Hospital
Pope Francis received a visit from the Vatican secretary of state on Sunday as he continued to recover from double pneumonia in the hospital. Despite his stable condition, the pope chose to skip his weekly noon blessing to avoid making a public appearance from the hospital.
Instead, the Vatican shared a message from Pope Francis in which he expressed his gratitude to his doctors for their care and thanked well-wishers for their prayers. He also prayed for peace in Ukraine and other conflict zones around the world.
In his message, Pope Francis reflected on the experience of being hospitalized and expressed solidarity with those who are sick and suffering. He emphasized the importance of trusting in the Lord during times of frailty and thanked God for the opportunity to share in the struggles of others.
While this marked the third consecutive weekend that Pope Francis had to cancel his Sunday appointment to deliver the Angelus prayer in person, there were signs of improvement in his condition. Despite a respiratory crisis on Friday, the pope’s health appeared to be stabilizing.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Pena Parra visited the pope on Sunday morning, indicating a positive trend in his recovery. Doctors reported that Pope Francis was in stable condition and had shown improvement in his respiratory function.
Although the pope remains under close observation, he was able to spend time in his private chapel, eat and drink normally, and continue with his respiratory therapy. His ability to use high-flow oxygen for extended periods without compromising his oxygen levels was a positive sign of progress.
Pope Francis, who has a history of lung disease and had part of one lung removed in his youth, was hospitalized on February 14 after developing pneumonia in both lungs. While his prognosis remains guarded, doctors are encouraged by his response to treatment and the absence of any new infections.
The Vatican has been inundated with prayers and well-wishes for Pope Francis during his hospitalization, especially as the Holy Year celebrations continue in Rome. Pilgrims from around the world have made the journey to the Gemelli hospital to pray for the pope’s recovery.
Despite the challenges of his illness, Pope Francis remains connected to his faith and continues to inspire others with his resilience. The outpouring of support from well-wishers and visitors at the hospital is a testament to the pope’s enduring influence and the power of prayer in times of need.
