Sharks Head Coach John Plumtree Responds to Fan Criticism
Sharks head coach John Plumtree recently addressed the media ahead of their United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Ulster, acknowledging the disappointment expressed by fans but emphasizing the team’s focus on self-improvement.
Despite currently holding fourth place on the URC log and securing the SA shield, the Sharks faced backlash for their performance in the European Rugby Champions Cup. Plumtree’s decision to field a second-string side in the Challenge Cup drew criticism, especially considering the availability of key Springbok players.
Even their recent narrow victory against Edinburgh in Scotland was met with scrutiny, with fans questioning the team’s performance and tactics. Plumtree, however, remains unfazed by the external pressure and continues to prioritize the team’s development.
‘The fans have all got their opinions’
Plumtree acknowledged the diverse opinions expressed by fans but emphasized the team’s unity and commitment to improvement. Despite the presence of 12 Springboks in the starting XV, Plumtree remains focused on the team’s progress rather than external expectations.
“At the end of the day, the fans have all got their opinions and that’s all great. That’s what we want,” Plumtree stated. “But collectively, we stay tight as a unit and we are always looking to improve, whether we win by one point or we win by 20.”
Sharks Group Focuses on What It Can Control
Plumtree highlighted the challenges faced by the team due to injuries and emphasized the importance of patience and resilience. Despite setbacks, the Sharks remain committed to their goals and prioritize performance over external pressure.
“It hasn’t been the easiest season because of continuity, particularly around selection, having players injured at crucial times of the year. But we are here, we have got the team that we want and it’s really up to us to make sure we perform and get the win,” Plumtree explained.
As the Sharks prepare to face Ulster, Plumtree’s focus remains on the team’s development and unity. While fan opinions may vary, the team’s commitment to improvement and success remains unwavering.
