Google Working on XR Headsets with Android Software Support
For a while now, there has been speculation about Google and Samsung’s plans for XR headsets running on Android. However, a recent teardown of the Play Store app indicates that Google is actively working on integrating software support for these headsets. While this doesn’t mean the headsets will be released imminently, it does suggest that Google is making preparations for their arrival.
Android Authority conducted an in-depth analysis of the latest APK file for the Play Store interface on Android and uncovered some compelling evidence. The code now allows Android apps to detect compatibility with an “XR headset” device, similar to how they check for compatibility with phones, tablets, watches, and Chromebooks. Additionally, there is an icon representing the device class, depicting a headset in the style of Oculus.
Although Android serves as the underlying open-source operating system for Meta’s Quest VR headsets, the software is heavily modified and locked down, making it distinct from traditional Android devices.
XR headsets, which encompass virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, are expected to be more versatile and wearable devices. Companies like Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm have been exploring this space, with ongoing developments and delays in their projects.
