Innocent Maela remains optimistic about Orlando Pirates’ title chances

Despite trailing Mamelodi Sundowns by 12 points in the Betway Premiership title race, Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela is not ready to give up just yet. The Buccaneers suffered a setback with a 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune United at home, but Maela is determined to keep fighting for the league title.

While Sundowns have extended their lead with a convincing 3-0 win over Richards Bay, Pirates still have two games in hand to make up ground. The upcoming Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs will be crucial for Pirates’ title hopes, and a defeat could all but end their chances.

Speaking to reporters, Maela expressed his belief that the league title is still within reach for Pirates. He emphasized the team’s determination to keep pushing until the end and not give up on their aspirations.

“I don’t believe the league is gone and I don’t think the guys also believe that,” Maela stated. “As long as there is a chance, we will never give up. It was a setback for us to lose the three points against Sekhukhune United, but we will come back stronger in the next match. It is far from over.”

Maela discusses his future at Orlando Pirates

Amid reports suggesting that he may retire at the end of the season and take on a new role at the club, Maela opened up about his future plans at Orlando Pirates.

Recognizing the importance of succession planning and passing on knowledge to the next generation, Maela hinted at a potential transition into a different role within the club.

“I think in life, just like anything else, you have to allow succession to happen because we all know you can’t play the game forever. So if you have an opportunity and God has placed you in a position where you can influence the next generation, you have to take it with both hands,” Maela shared.

While Maela did not confirm any specific details about his future plans, he mentioned that the club would release an official statement at the appropriate time. For now, Maela remains focused on leading Orlando Pirates in their pursuit of the league title and making a positive impact both on and off the field.
