ActionSA has called for the resignation of KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane over her alleged dishonesty regarding medicine shortages in the province. This comes after reports surfaced of essential medication shortages in public hospitals and clinics, despite denials from the department spokesperson, Ntokozo Maphisa.

Patients and staff at various healthcare facilities have come forward to confirm the shortage of medications. Zethu Ziqubu from KwaNqetho shared her experience of not receiving all her pills at the Waterfall Clinic, while Mlungisi Zulu from Embo only received a one-month supply of his pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) at Philakade Clinic, instead of the usual two to three months.

Sthandwa Zulu recounted her visit to St Mary’s Hospital where she was given two bottles of ARVs instead of the usual three, with staff attributing the shortage to a supposed decision to save medication due to Trump’s announcement of suspending PEPFAR.

The issue of medicine shortages has also been raised on the KZN health department’s Facebook page, with many patients expressing their concerns.

During an unscheduled visit to various healthcare facilities, the MEC and her team claimed to have found no evidence of medicine shortages in the province. The department spokesperson, Ntokozo Maphisa, stated that all inspections revealed sufficient stocks of essential medication available at healthcare facilities.

However, a professional nurse from Halley Stott Clinic, who preferred to remain anonymous, contradicted these claims by stating that the pharmacy department often does not receive all the medications it orders from the depot.

Thandeka Njapha, the PPSD manager, also denied reports of medicine shortages, stating that they are managing stock strictly to avoid waste and overstocking. She emphasized that orders are still being placed and distributed to various health facilities.

Despite these assurances, Thandeka Magwaza, a professional nurse at St Mary’s Hospital, accused the KZN Department of Health of being dishonest about the delivery of medication, claiming that the PPSD regularly delays orders.

This issue of medicine shortages is not new, as the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in the province raised concerns about critical medication shortages as early as January. Despite ongoing budgetary constraints and a challenging economic climate, the department maintains that there has been no shortage of medication in the province since January.

The call for the resignation of Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane by ActionSA highlights the urgent need for transparency and accountability in addressing the critical issue of medicine shortages in KZN. Patients and healthcare workers alike deserve access to essential medications without compromise, and it is crucial for the health department to address these concerns promptly and effectively.
