On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2024, a touching memorial service was held for retired Air Force Major Gary “Bear” Sholders at the Armed Forces Tribute Garden in Westminster, Colorado. Sholders, a highly decorated fighter jet pilot, passed away on October 26th, 2024 at the age of 80. His son, Trevor Sholders, spoke fondly of his father’s commitment and bravery, highlighting his impressive military career.
Major Sholders served for 20 years in the Air Force and was honored with prestigious awards such as the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his exceptional courage and heroism. The Air and Space Force base Honor Guard from Buckley Air Force Base paid tribute to Major Sholders with a traditional firing of three volleys. A poignant moment came when an F-16 from the 120th Fighter Squadron soared overhead in a fly-over, symbolizing Major Sholders’ enduring legacy. His wife of 57 years, Suzi, was presented with an American flag in honor of her late husband.
The service was a fitting tribute to a dedicated and courageous veteran who served his country with distinction.
