Okey Bakassi Advocates for Polygamy as Ideal for African Culture
Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, recently shared his views on marriage, expressing his belief that polygamy may be a more suitable marital structure for African societies.
In a conversation on “The Honest Bunch” podcast, Bakassi made a case for polygamy, stating that monogamy, which is often portrayed as the norm, is not effectively serving African communities. He argued that polygamy better reflects the realities of African life and relationships.
“Let’s stop pretending about polygamy. I still believe that it is the best form of marriage for Africa. Monogamy is not working for us. It’s all a facade,” Bakassi asserted.
Explaining the distinction between polygamy and monogamy, Bakassi emphasized that polygamy allows for the simultaneous marriage of multiple partners, while monogamy restricts individuals to one spouse at a time.
He posed a thought-provoking question, “What if you don’t want to let go of that one partner?” suggesting that polygamy offers a solution to such dilemmas.
Bakassi also endorsed the idea of women having the freedom to marry multiple husbands if they so desire, advocating for societal acceptance of such arrangements.
His unconventional stance on marriage has sparked a lively debate on the dynamics of relationships in African societies, where traditional and modern values often clash.
Following the podcast episode, social media platforms have been abuzz with reactions to Bakassi’s views, with many individuals sharing their opinions on the matter.
