The recent post-flagbearer elections in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have brought about a sense of division within the party, with members taking sides in support of different flagbearer aspirants. In light of this, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has advised NPP MPs to remain neutral to promote unity within the party.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of MPs maintaining a neutral stance to avoid becoming targets of backlash from supporters of rival candidates. He stressed the need for unity within the party post-election and urged MPs to act with caution and refrain from engaging in divisive tactics.

The Minority Leader highlighted the significance of focusing on the vision and policies of the candidates rather than resorting to personal attacks and name-calling. He underscored the importance of promoting a positive and constructive campaign environment that fosters unity and reconciliation within the party.

Afenyo-Markin also advised MPs to exercise restraint in their public statements and actions to facilitate post-primary reconciliation efforts. He emphasized the role of MPs in promoting party unity and urged them to demonstrate love and solidarity towards one another.

Drawing from his own experience, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality in party politics to avoid trust deficits and promote inclusivity. He highlighted the need for MPs to play a pivotal role in post-election reconciliation efforts and urged them to prioritize the party’s interest above personal agendas.

Regarding the early presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026, Afenyo-Markin expressed support for the decision, citing the party’s constitution and the need for internal reforms. He emphasized the importance of organizational readiness and cohesion at the grassroots level to ensure a smooth transition post-primary.

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also supported the early primary decision, highlighting the authority of the National Council in setting the date and promoting peace within the party. However, party member Dr. Arthur Kennedy expressed concerns about the timing of the primary, advocating for a more democratic approach to candidate selection and emphasizing the need for party renewal and inclusivity.

Overall, the call for neutrality, unity, and inclusivity within the NPP underscores the importance of fostering a harmonious and cohesive party environment. By prioritizing the party’s interests and promoting a positive campaign culture, MPs can contribute to building a stronger and more resilient NPP ahead of the upcoming presidential primary.
