New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pardoned all suspended members and halted pending disciplinary cases in a bid for unity.

Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey announced the decision in an August 16 statement, revealing the National Council’s July 25 resolution.

The move lifts all suspensions and terminates ongoing proceedings against affected members. Buttey framed the amnesty as essential for fostering internal cohesion ahead of future political challenges. “This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to strengthening solidarity,” he stated.

Former members seeking reinstatement must apply formally to the national secretariat. Those readmitted face one key restriction: they cannot contest internal party elections for two years. Buttey simultaneously cautioned local leaders against arbitrary suspensions, stressing that all disciplinary actions must follow the party constitution strictly.

The sweeping pardon signals the NPP’s effort to consolidate its base as the party positions itself for Ghana’s 2028 elections, where it will need to select a new presidential candidate.
