The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Opts Out of Tamale Central By-Election
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made a decision not to participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election following the tragic passing of Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash. The late MP was one of eight individuals who lost their lives while serving the Republic on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Party Decision
During a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the Party Headquarters, the NPP decided in accordance with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution that they will not contest in the by-election. The Party took into consideration various factors, including the circumstances surrounding the vacancy and concerns about potential polarization during a sensitive period.
The NPP stated that it would be insensitive and unjustifiable to subject the nation to a competitive electoral process so soon after the tragic incident. They emphasized the need to avoid the tensions and conflicts often associated with by-elections. The Party believes that the best way to honor the late MP and others who lost their lives is to focus on combating illegal mining and ensuring a smooth and peaceful transition for the constituents of Tamale Central.
According to the Party’s announcement, they will abstain from the contest when the Electoral Commission initiates the nomination process as per Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution, prioritizing the national interest above political gain.
The statement was issued and signed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.
