The African National Congress (ANC) recently made a statement regarding the controversial anti-apartheid slogan “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer.” ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula emphasized that there is no longer a justification for chanting this slogan but also clarified that they will not dilute it to please the Boer community. Mbalula highlighted the party’s focus on transformation and economic development for the benefit of all citizens.
The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Boksburg addressed various issues, including the national budget and the strained relationship with the United States. The Trump administration has criticized South Africa for the perceived persecution of white South Africans, leading to tensions between the two countries.
Mbalula reiterated that the ANC does not support hate speech or incendiary chants against any group. He referenced a recent constitutional court ruling that dismissed AfriForum’s appeal against Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), for his use of the controversial slogan. The court deemed the appeal without merit, upholding previous decisions that the slogan did not constitute hate speech.
In response to ongoing discussions about the national budget, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has faced opposition from coalition partners like the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the EFF over proposed tax increases. Despite scaling back the VAT hike, Godongwana revealed that the DA had previously expressed willingness to accept the increase in exchange for policy changes.
The DA, however, accused Godongwana of negotiating in bad faith and emphasized the need for growth-enhancing reforms and tax reductions. Mbalula acknowledged parliamentary engagements on the budget issue and affirmed the ANC’s commitment to passing a budget that serves the country’s interests.
As discussions continue, Mbalula assured that the ANC will consider all perspectives and make decisions guided by the NEC’s wisdom. It is crucial for the budget to be approved to support economic growth and job creation. The ANC remains open to dialogue with other parties to find common ground and ensure a prosperous future for all South Africans.
