Modupeola Fadugba, a talented artist from Nigeria, has recently been announced as the grand prize winner of the prestigious Norval Sovereign African Art Prize 2025, sponsored by Schroders. Her captivating piece, “Portrait Of An Artist At Ease,” has earned her this accolade, making her the fourth artist to receive this esteemed award.
Fadugba’s artwork encapsulates a unique blend of art, science, and social engagement, reflecting her background in chemical engineering and economics. Through her paintings, drawings, and installations, she delves into themes of identity, justice, and human connection with a structured and analytical approach. Based in Ibadan, Nigeria, Fadugba’s thought-provoking creations offer fresh perspectives on the intricate narratives that shape contemporary Nigerian society.
To recognize her talent and contribution to the art world, Fadugba will receive a cash prize of $35,000, the opportunity to showcase a solo exhibition at the Norval Foundation in Cape Town, and a two-week cultural residency at Outset Contemporary Art Fund in London. This prestigious award aims to celebrate leading contemporary artists and enhance their international exposure.
In her latest masterpiece, “Portrait Of An Artist At Ease,” Fadugba explores the juxtaposition of deep black and luminous gold on canvas, conveying a sense of mystery and revelation. The artwork symbolizes her creative evolution, portraying confidence and self-discovery as she emerges ethereally from darkness. By bridging tradition with innovation, Fadugba’s work captures the profound essence of human experience.

Fadugba’s exceptional work was selected through a rigorous evaluation process by a panel of five distinguished global judges, including Raphael Chikukwa, Tim Marlow, Dr. Same Mdluli, Thato Mogotsi, and Simon Njami. Judge Dr. Same Mdluli commended the caliber of the finalists and emphasized the significance of the award in promoting African talent.
The Norval Sovereign African Art Prize 2025 exhibition, curated by Carmen Joubert, is currently on display in Gallery 9 at the Norval Foundation until April 20, 2025.
