The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has called for a thorough investigation and a full autopsy into the tragic death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian football player in Uganda. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death, labeling it as suspicious and distressing.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the need for a transparent inquiry, stating that the Nigerian government will ensure a comprehensive investigation without any cover-ups. She extended her condolences to Lawal’s family, praying for his soul to rest in peace and for his loved ones to find the strength to cope with the loss.
The incident occurred on February 24, 2025, when Abubakar Lawal reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Uganda. Lawal, a professional football player for Vipers Sports Club, had gone to the mall to meet his friend Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national residing in room 416 since February 20, 2025.
According to initial findings, Naima left Lawal in the tea-making area and went to a game center within the mall. Shortly after, Lawal fell from the balcony around 8:00 am and was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Among the items found in Lawal’s possession were two iPhones, open shoes, headphones, training equipment, and chargers.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to determine the exact circumstances leading to Lawal’s tragic demise. The Kajjansi Police Division is spearheading the investigation to shed light on the events that transpired on that fateful day.
The Nigerian community in Uganda and abroad awaits the outcome of the investigation, seeking justice for Abubakar Lawal and closure for his grieving family. The call for a transparent and comprehensive inquiry into his death underscores the commitment to upholding accountability and ensuring that the truth is revealed.
