Abuja and Beijing Strengthen Strategic Partnership
Abuja and Beijing have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership, with a focus on clean energy, defense, finance, and regional security. This announcement came during the recent visit of China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, to Nigeria. The visit follows President Bola Tinubu’s trip to China in September, which elevated the bilateral relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”
During the visit, China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, and Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, discussed various areas of cooperation. Yi reiterated China’s support for Nigeria’s issuance of Panda bonds to fund infrastructure projects and expressed interest in expanding a currency swap agreement with Nigeria. Additionally, China pledged to assist Nigeria in addressing regional security challenges by advocating for Africa’s interests at the United Nations Security Council.
Wang Yi’s visit to Nigeria is part of a larger tour of four African countries and reflects China’s broader strategy to strengthen its influence on the continent.
