Brazilian Star Neymar Left in Tears After Santos’ Heavy Defeat

Following Santos’ 6-0 home defeat to Vasco da Gama, Brazilian forward Neymar was seen leaving the pitch in tears. This loss marked the heaviest defeat of Neymar’s career and was the first time Santos had conceded six goals at home in a Brazilian Serie A match.

Struggles for Santos

The eight-time champions are currently two points above the relegation zone, and the aftermath of the match saw coach Cleber Xavier being dismissed from his position.

Vasco da Gama’s Victory

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa player Philippe Coutinho scored twice, leading Vasco da Gama to their first victory in six league matches and their biggest league triumph in 17 years.

Neymar’s Disappointment

Expressing his disappointment, Neymar said, “I’m ashamed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence. But if they want to curse and insult, they’re in their right. To sum up our attitude on the field, it was terrible.”

He added, “I’ve never experienced this in my life. The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can’t help in every way.”

Neymar’s Career

Neymar, the most expensive footballer in the world, transferred to Paris St-Germain from Barcelona for £200 million in 2017. After a stint with Saudi Pro League team Al-Hilal, he returned to his childhood club Santos in January.

Since rejoining Santos, the 33-year-old has scored six goals and provided three assists in 21 matches across all competitions after signing a new six-month contract in June.

Recovery and Relegation

The leading goal scorer in Brazil’s history, Neymar left the field in tears after sustaining an injury in his first Serie A start of the season. He missed the following five league matches due to a hamstring injury.

Xavier, who took over as head coach in April, saw Santos win five out of 15 matches under his management. Santos is now sitting just two places above the relegation zone, one spot higher than Vasco da Gama, who moved out of the bottom four following their victory.

Santos reclaimed their position in the Brazilian top flight last November after spending a year in Serie B due to their first-ever relegation.
