Ghana Athletics, the governing body for athletics in the country, is considering holding a national trial to select the best sprinters to represent Ghana on the international stage. The body has already confirmed a national championship scheduled for August 2025, which could also serve as the national trial for Ghana’s sprinters if more than three of them meet the qualifying mark for the World Championships.
President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fusini, revealed that there will be a national championship in August where the final selection for the World Championships in Japan (September 2025) will take place. The hope is to have more than three athletes qualify for the 100m event, with the qualifying mark set at 10 seconds. Currently, four of Ghana’s sprinters have come close to meeting the mark during the United States outdoor season.
Benjamin Azamati, Ghana’s record holder in the 100m event, ran an impressive 10.02 seconds at the Desert Heat Classics in Tucson, Arizona. His teammate, Abdul Rashid Saminu, clocked a wind-assisted 9.87 seconds at the Florida Relays in April. Joseph Paul Amoah, who led Ghana’s relay team to qualify for the World Championships, ran 10.21s at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore. Ibrahim Fuseini also showcased his talent by running 10.03 in Texas on May 1st, 2025.
Fusini emphasized the importance of bringing all foreign athletes to Ghana for national trials, similar to how other countries like Nigeria, the United States, Australia, and South Africa conduct their selection processes. This strategy ensures that Ghana’s top athletes have the opportunity to compete and showcase their skills on a national platform.
In a recent competition, Fuseini was named the Most Outstanding Performer after winning gold medals in the 4×100 meter relay, the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and anchoring the 4×400 meter relay. His exceptional performance contributed significantly to East Texas A&M University’s success, earning 25 out of the team’s 86 points as they finished fourth overall.
As Ghana Athletics prepares for the national championship and potential national trials, the focus remains on identifying and supporting talented sprinters who have the potential to excel on the global stage. By providing a platform for these athletes to showcase their skills and compete against top competition, Ghana aims to elevate its presence in the world of athletics and build a strong team for future international events.
