Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Inaugurated as Namibia’s First Female President

On March 21, 2025, history was made in Namibia as Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as the country’s first female president. In her inaugural address, President Nandi-Ndaitwah outlined her plans to diversify the nation’s economy, moving away from its traditional reliance on natural resources.

One of the main strategies highlighted by the new president is the focus on boosting investments in the agricultural sector. This move aims to increase domestic food production and work towards achieving self-sufficiency in food supply. Additionally, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the importance of adding value to Namibia’s natural resources, ensuring that the country’s wealth benefits its citizens directly.

Addressing the pressing issue of high unemployment rates, especially among the youth population, President Nandi-Ndaitwah underscored the importance of creating new job opportunities through economic diversification. She also pledged to maintain high ethical standards in public service and to intensify efforts in combating corruption.

Despite recent economic growth driven by investments in oil, gas, and green hydrogen, Namibia continues to face significant income inequality. In fact, World Bank data ranks the country as the second highest globally in terms of income inequality.
