File photo of a worried woman
Dear GhanaWeb,
Seeking advice on a complex situation involving my son and a young woman he impregnated.
The girl, 20, is pregnant, and both sets of parents are involved. While her parents are upset, I believe blame should not be solely on my son.
My son, 22, and the girl are university coursemates. The girl’s parents want her to keep the baby, ruling out abortion. They demand she live with them and continue attending lectures until delivery.
Moreover, they insist my son drop out of school as the girl will also have to. They are requesting a monthly allowance of GH₵7,000, increasing to GH₵10,000 closer to the due date.
We proposed the girl live with us for better care and support through school, but the mother declined. After seeing our home and cars, she became more demanding, fixated on the money.
We are willing to support the girl’s education and the couple’s future if they still love each other post-birth. However, the girl’s mother is focused on her terms, threatening to cut off contact if we don’t comply.
We want to be involved in the baby’s life and provide support without being exploited. The decisions made now will impact the young couple’s futures, and we seek guidance on the best course of action.
