Kitcheners, a beloved bar in Braamfontein, officially reopened its doors on Thursday with a launch attended by media and sports personalities. The bar, which holds a special place in the hearts of many Joburg residents, had closed down nearly a year ago, leaving behind a trail of fond memories.
Originally founded in 1902 as Kitchener’s Carvery Bar, the establishment was located next to Jimmy’s Inn, forming part of the historic Milner Park Hotel. The bar is said to have been named after Lord Kitchener, who used the venue in 1902 to sign the treaty ending the Anglo-Boer War.
Comedian Jason Goliath and fellow comic Donavan Goliath hosted the reopening launch, reminiscing about the good times spent at Kitcheners. Jason Goliath recalled how Kitcheners was the go-to spot to end the night after other entertainment engagements. He shared stories of patrons converging at the bar in the early hours of the morning, recounting their adventures from the night.
One of Jason Goliath’s favorite memories was when his sister met her husband at Kitcheners while tipsy at three in the morning. The closure of Kitcheners last year came as a shock to many, as the bar had been a thriving hub of activity for over a century.
Fortunately, the decision was made to revive Kitcheners, with development entity Play Braam taking over ownership of the property. Marcel Cronje, Play Braam’s Head of Hospitality, Development, and Growth, expressed the importance of honoring Kitcheners’ legacy and preserving its unique charm.
Despite a few changes to the lavatories and some decorative upgrades, Kitcheners remains true to its roots with its velvet walls, hard wooden floors, and hip dingy atmosphere. The weekly comedy nights, a staple at Kitcheners, will continue to provide a platform for up-and-coming comedians to showcase their talent.
Moving forward, Kitcheners plans to host comedy nights every Wednesday, creating a space for young comics to hone their craft. The reopening of Kitcheners is a testament to the enduring legacy of this historic bar and its significance in the cultural fabric of Joburg.
As Joburgers flock back to Braamfontein to reconnect with their favorite watering hole, Kitcheners is poised to reclaim its status as a beloved institution in the city’s nightlife scene. The memories shared and the stories told at Kitcheners over the years will continue to resonate with patrons old and new, ensuring that this iconic bar remains a cherished part of Joburg’s cultural landscape.
