The telecommunications sector in Ghana is set to receive a major boost as the three major networks in the country, MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo, have collectively committed to investing approximately $150 million by the end of the year to enhance the quality of their services. This announcement was made by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, during a press briefing on June 10, 2025.

During his address, Minister George highlighted the challenges facing the sector, attributing them to mismanagement by the previous Akufo-Addo administration over the past eight years. He emphasized the need for significant improvements in service quality and customer experience, urging all operators to make critical investments to enhance their services or face sanctions.

Minister George stressed the importance of healthy and sustainable competition in the sector, with a focus on value-added data bundle offerings and eventual price reductions in the medium to long term. He announced that all operators have been directed to make necessary investments in their networks over the next quarter, from July to September, to improve service quality.

Following these investments, the National Communications Authority (NCA) will conduct a thorough quality of service assessment in the final quarter of the year, from October to December, with operators that fail to meet standards facing sanctions. Minister George commended the CEOs of the three telcos for their commitment to investing in their networks to enhance service quality.

In addition to the investment plans, Minister George also announced upcoming increases in data bundles across the three major networks, effective July 1. Airtel Ghana will see a 10% increase in all existing data bundles, with the GH₵400 bundle offering 236GB of data. Telecel will also experience a 10% increase in all data bundles, with the GH₵400 bundle providing 250GB of data. MTN, on the other hand, will see a 15% increase in all existing data bundles and the reinstatement of the GH₵399 bundle, offering 214GB for GH₵399.

These initiatives are aimed at improving service quality and enhancing the overall customer experience in the telecommunications sector in Ghana. The investments and data bundle increases are expected to bring about positive changes and benefits for consumers across the country.
