Calvin Ratladi, a talented actor who has honed his craft in theatre, recently received the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award for theatre. Known for his portrayal of Goloza on the popular TV show Shaka iLembe, Ratladi has captivated audiences with his powerful performances.

The divide between theatre and television has always been a topic of discussion among artists. When Ratladi’s name was announced as the SBYA recipient, the room erupted in cheers from fellow artists. Ratladi, who is 34 years old, shared in an interview with The Citizen that most people recognize him from his role on Shaka iLembe, but his work in theatre showcases a different side of his talent.

On Shaka iLembe, Ratladi plays Goloza, the firstborn son of Queen Ntombazi, portrayed by Khabonina Qubeka. Despite initially rejecting the role due to concerns about stereotyping, Ratladi eventually accepted after being convinced by the script and the thorough research that went into the character. Goloza, who lives with a disability, is exiled to live in a cave with a zombie-like figure, serving as a conduit for supernatural powers that aid his younger brother’s reign.

Ratladi, who lives with kyphoscoliosis, a condition that causes an abnormal curve of the spine, has faced challenges in the industry due to stereotypes about disabilities. However, his portrayal of Goloza on Shaka iLembe has challenged perceptions and opened doors for representation in the industry. He has also used his platform to advocate for more opportunities for artists with disabilities.

In his acceptance speech for the SBYA, Ratladi expressed hope that the award would open doors for other artists living with disabilities. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the talent of individuals like jazz pianist and singer Yonela Mnana, who is blind, and highlighted the need for greater inclusivity in the arts.

The Standard Bank Young Artist Award celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, honoring over 180 artists across various disciplines. Ratladi’s recognition is a testament to his dedication and talent, and he continues to push boundaries in the industry. As a lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Ratladi is also shaping the next generation of artists and inspiring them to break barriers and challenge stereotypes.

Ratladi’s journey from theatre to television exemplifies the power of storytelling and representation in the arts. His success serves as a reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the industry, and he continues to be a trailblazer for artists with disabilities. The rise of plant-based diets has been a major trend in recent years, with more and more people turning to vegetarian and vegan lifestyles for health, environmental, and ethical reasons. Plant-based diets are not only good for the planet, but they also offer a wide range of health benefits.

One of the main reasons people choose to follow a plant-based diet is for its positive impact on the environment. Livestock farming is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. By reducing or eliminating animal products from their diets, individuals can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and help mitigate climate change.

Plant-based diets are also beneficial for personal health. Research has shown that vegetarian and vegan diets are associated with lower rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Plant-based foods are rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can help boost the immune system and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Additionally, plant-based diets are often lower in saturated fat and cholesterol compared to diets that include animal products. This can lead to improved heart health, lower cholesterol levels, and reduced risk of heart disease. Plant-based diets are also rich in fiber, which can aid in digestion, promote satiety, and help maintain a healthy weight.

Many people also choose plant-based diets for ethical reasons, as they believe in the humane treatment of animals. By opting for plant-based foods, individuals can avoid supporting the cruel practices of factory farming and the mistreatment of animals.

Overall, the rise of plant-based diets reflects a growing awareness of the impact of our food choices on our health, the environment, and animal welfare. Whether you’re looking to improve your health, reduce your carbon footprint, or make a positive impact on animal welfare, a plant-based diet is a great option to consider. With a wide variety of delicious plant-based foods available, it’s easier than ever to make the switch and reap the many benefits of a plant-based lifestyle.
