Teenager from New Hampshire Catches Potential World Record Atlantic Halibut
A 13-year-old boy from Hampton, New Hampshire, made headlines this week after reeling in a massive 177-pound Atlantic halibut while on a deep-sea fishing trip. Jackson Denio, who weighs around 120 pounds and is 5-foot-9-inches tall, caught the fish during an overnight charter trip with Al Gauron’s Deep Sea Fishing and Whale Watching.
Denio had initially set out to catch a shark, but ended up hooking the giant halibut instead. After a 30-minute struggle, he was able to bring the fish to the surface with the help of the crew and fellow passengers. The size of the fish left everyone onboard in awe, with one person even calling Denio “an angel of a man.”
Before the fish was carved up, Denio had it officially weighed and took photos and video for a potential world record application with the International Game Fish Association. The family plans to submit applications for both the junior record for Atlantic halibut and a line class record.
Despite all the attention, Denio is already thinking about his next fishing adventure. He expressed his desire to beat his own record and catch an even bigger fish in the future.
