The suspect in the shooting deaths of Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, embarked on a chilling spree that targeted several Minnesota state legislators in the early hours of Saturday. Vance Luther Boelter, 57, allegedly visited the homes of at least four Democratic lawmakers, including Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, before ultimately fleeing under police gunfire.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson detailed Boelter’s movements at a press conference, announcing federal homicide charges against him that could lead to the death penalty. The charges included shooting Sen. Hoffman and his wife, as well as the murder of the Hortmans, along with charges of stalking both couples.

The suspect, disguised convincingly as a police officer, donned a black tactical vest, body armor, and a silicone mask while carrying a 9mm Beretta handgun. Security footage captured his approach at the Hoffmans’ residence, where he initially posed as law enforcement before revealing his true intentions.

Boelter allegedly attempted to rob the Hoffmans, resulting in a confrontation that led to gunfire and his subsequent escape. He then proceeded to two other homes before arriving at the Hortmans’, where a tragic and violent encounter unfolded in front of law enforcement officers.

The chaotic scene ended with the Hortmans and their family dog being shot by Boelter, who fled the scene under gunfire. Despite efforts to save them, both Melissa and Mark Hortman succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

A massive manhunt ensued, culminating in Boelter’s arrest in a wooded area after being detected by a local resident’s trail camera. The suspect was found with discarded tactical gear and weapons along his escape route.

Further investigation revealed disturbing evidence linking Boelter to the shootings, including notebooks filled with plans, names of potential targets, and surveillance materials. However, prosecutors have yet to determine a clear motive for his actions.

Boelter’s movements post-shootings, including attempts to sell belongings and interactions with law enforcement, painted a picture of a calculated and dangerous individual. The federal case against him is set to proceed alongside state-level murder charges.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Melissa Hortman and her husband while grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence. The motive behind Boelter’s actions remains unclear, leaving many questions unanswered in the wake of this tragedy.
