Today is Sunday, May 4, 2025, marking the 124th day of the year with 241 days left. On this day in history, significant events have taken place, shaping the course of our world.

In 1970, a tragic incident occurred at Kent State University when Ohio National Guardsmen fired on student demonstrators during an anti-war protest, resulting in the deaths of four students and the wounding of nine others. This event highlighted the tensions surrounding the Vietnam War and the anti-war movement.

Another notable event on May 4 occurred in 1886 at Haymarket Square in Chicago, where a labor demonstration advocating for an 8-hour workday turned violent when a bomb exploded, claiming the lives of seven police officers and at least four civilians. This incident underscored the struggles faced by workers and the ongoing fight for labor rights.

In 1904, the United States took over the construction of the Panama Canal from France, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure and global trade.

During World War II in 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea commenced, becoming the first naval clash fought entirely with carrier aircraft. Although Japan achieved a tactical victory, the Allies emerged victorious strategically, showcasing the importance of naval warfare in the Pacific theater.

In 1961, the first group of “Freedom Riders” departed from Washington, D.C., to challenge racial segregation on interstate buses and in bus terminals, sparking a movement for civil rights and equality.

In more recent history, in 1998, Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski received four life sentences plus 30 years for his terrorist activities, avoiding the death penalty through a plea agreement in Sacramento, California.

Fast forward to 2023, former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and three other members of the extremist group were convicted of a plot to attack the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to maintain Donald Trump’s presidency following his loss in the 2020 election. Tarrio was ultimately sentenced to 22 years in prison but was later pardoned by Trump on the first day of his second term in office.

Today, we also celebrate the birthdays of notable individuals, including jazz musician Ron Carter (88), Pulitzer Prize-winning political commentator George Will (84), actor Richard Jenkins (78), country singer Randy Travis (66), and comedian Ana Gasteyer (58), among others. These individuals have made significant contributions to their respective fields and continue to inspire others with their talents and achievements.

As we reflect on the events of the past and celebrate the accomplishments of those around us, let us strive to create a better future for all.
