On this day in history, May 22, 1960, southern Chile experienced the strongest earthquake ever recorded. The magnitude 9.5 quake resulted in the loss of 1,655 lives, displaced 2 million people, and triggered a tsunami that caused additional fatalities in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.
