A devastating fire broke out at the Bush Canteen, a popular eatery located at the University of Ghana, Legon, causing extensive damage to property estimated to be worth thousands of Ghana cedis. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, is believed to have been triggered by a gas explosion, according to initial reports.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, fortunately, there were no reported casualties. Videos shared on social media captured the ferocity of the flames as they rapidly engulfed the canteen, sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky. Students and vendors in the vicinity were forced to evacuate as the fire quickly spread.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) swiftly responded to the emergency, dispatching firefighters to the scene to contain the flames and prevent further destruction. DOI Alex King Nartey of the GNFS revealed that the fire at the Estate Block started around 9:00 PM and was successfully brought under control within an hour. Due to the presence of flammable substances, fire tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe were also deployed to assist in extinguishing the blaze.
“The fire is currently 90% contained, and our priority now is to prevent any potential resurgence. We deployed four fire tenders to the site to ensure the safety of the surrounding area,” DOI Nartey confirmed. He added that approximately 20 refrigerators, freezers, and spare parts were lost in the fire incident.
The recent spate of fire outbreaks in various parts of Ghana has raised significant concerns among the public. The authorities are working tirelessly to investigate the cause of the fire at the Bush Canteen and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
