An ordinary day turned extraordinary when a nature-loving metal detectorist stumbled upon a trove of ancient treasure. Marius Mangeac, the lucky discoverer, shared the remarkable find with Fox News Digital. The cache was uncovered in a field near Letca Veche, a quaint village in southern Romania.
In a Facebook post, Mangeac recounted the serendipitous moment, describing how he set out on a typical Saturday for some leisurely metal detecting in the countryside. Little did he know that this particular outing would lead him to a piece of history. As his metal detector signaled a discovery, Mangeac unearthed a total of 1,469 Roman coins, primarily silver denarii.
The sight of the ancient coins left Mangeac in awe, with his heart racing and thoughts of disbelief crossing his mind. Reflecting on the significance of the find, he pondered about the individuals who once possessed these coins and the purpose they served in ancient times. Mangeac estimated that the coins are at least 2,000 years old, adding a layer of historical depth to his remarkable discovery.
Following two days of meticulous documentation through photography, Mangeac decided to entrust the coins to the town hall in Letca Nouă. He expressed a hope to one day share this incredible experience with his child at a museum, where they can delve into the rich history behind the coins.
This discovery by Mangeac comes shortly after another pair of metal detectorists uncovered ancient treasures in Romania’s Breaza commune, located in Transylvania. The treasures, dating back to the Dacian era, shed light on the historical interactions and conflicts between the Dacians and the Roman Empire during the second century A.D.
