A 58-year-old man was fatally shot by Aurora police on Saturday after he pointed a gun at officers during a family disturbance, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department. The incident took place at a residence on the 15800 block of East Arkansas Drive at around 5:45 p.m., with the shooting occurring just 15 minutes later.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that a husband and wife were involved in a heated argument. The couple separated, and the husband retreated to the garage. As officers attempted to speak to the husband about the disturbance, he retrieved a gun from a toolbox. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, the man instead aimed it at the officers, prompting one officer to fire their weapon.
The injured man, an Aurora resident, was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release his identity in due course. Fortunately, none of the officers involved sustained any injuries during the incident.
Following department protocol, the officer who discharged their firearm has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting and use of force. The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is leading the inquiry.
