A tragic incident that occurred in Adams County in 2020 has finally reached a verdict in court. Fructuoso Rosales-Cano, a 49-year-old man, was convicted of vehicular homicide for a drunken-driving crash that claimed the lives of two individuals, including Commerce City police detective Curt Holland.

The incident took place on October 16, 2020, when Rosales-Cano was speeding in his Ford F-350 on Colorado 2 near Turnberry Parkway. He was attempting to pass slower cars when he lost control of his vehicle and swerved into oncoming traffic. The collision resulted in the death of Detective Curt Holland, who was on duty at the time, and 31-year-old Francesca Dominguez, who was driving a Kia Soul.

The impact of the crash was devastating, with both victims dying instantly. Rosales-Cano, who had a blood alcohol level of .294 at the time of the crash, sustained life-threatening injuries. It was later discovered that he had previous DUI convictions in 1997 and 2006.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office reported that Rosales-Cano was found guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence and two counts of driving under the influence with two or more prior convictions. The jury deliberated for approximately an hour before delivering the guilty verdict.

Commerce City Police Department officials expressed their relief at the verdict, acknowledging that while it cannot bring back the two lives lost, it may provide some closure to the families and friends of the victims. Police Chief Darrel Guadnola emphasized the devastating impact of Rosales-Cano’s decision to drink and drive, stating that it has shattered countless lives.

Rosales-Cano is scheduled to be sentenced on January 9th. District Attorney Brian Mason condemned his actions, calling the damage caused by the defendant “truly unfathomable.” He expressed his hope that the verdict would bring some measure of justice to the victims and their loved ones.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the devastating consequences that can result. It is a sobering reminder to always make responsible choices when behind the wheel.
