The Malawi Women’s National Team, known as the Scorchers, is gearing up for two friendly matches against Banyana Banyana in Johannesburg, South Africa. These matches, scheduled for April 5 and 8, 2025, are crucial for the team as they prepare for the upcoming WAFCON qualifier against Angola.

Head coach Lovemore Fazili expressed the significance of these games in shaping the team’s development. He highlighted the importance of international friendly matches in honing the players’ skills and building team chemistry. Fazili commended the Football Association for organizing these matches, emphasizing their role in enhancing the team’s performance.

Despite the absence of key players such as the Chawinga Sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, and Rose Kabzere, Fazili remains optimistic about the squad’s depth. The team will be boosted by the presence of foreign-based players Chimwemwe Madise, Vanessa Chikupira, and Bernadetta Makandawire.

Fazili acknowledged the disappointment of missing key players but expressed confidence in the local players’ improvement and maturity. With the addition of foreign-based players, Fazili believes the team will be well-equipped to face their opponents.

The traveling squad includes goalkeepers Mercy Sikelo, Yamikani Kaonga, and Ireen Sibande. The defensive line-up features Chimwemwe Madise, Bernadettar Mkandawire, Ireen Khumalo, Rose Alufandika, Maureen Kenneth, Maggie Chavula, Justina Jumbo, and Olivia Phikani. The midfield comprises Leticia Chinyamula, Tendai Sani, Zainab Kapanda, Jessie Yosefe, Funny Magombo, Caroline Mathyola, Lydia Mcochoma, and Faruna Umali. The striking department includes Chisomo Banda, Vitumbiko Mkandawire, Sabina Thom, and Vanessa Chipikula.

The team is looking forward to these friendly matches as they aim to fine-tune their tactics and strategies ahead of the crucial WAFCON qualifier. The players are determined to make the most of this opportunity and showcase their skills on the international stage. The coaching staff is working diligently to ensure that the team is well-prepared and ready to face their opponents with confidence and determination.
