Trump Warns Putin: End Ukraine War Now or Face Sanctions
In a bold move, US President Donald Trump has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a swift agreement to end the ongoing war in Ukraine or face the consequences of increased tariffs and additional sanctions.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “If we don’t secure a ‘deal’ soon, I will have no choice but to impose steep taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on all goods sold by Russia to the United States and other allied nations.” Despite the tough stance, Trump emphasized that he is not looking to harm Russia and has always maintained a strong relationship with President Putin.
While Trump had previously hinted at the possibility of imposing sanctions during a White House press briefing, his recent statements are more assertive and direct. He acknowledged the need for Putin to engage in negotiations to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
While Trump did not confirm whether he would continue supplying arms to Ukraine as per Joe Biden’s approach, he expressed his commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Before assuming office, Trump had vowed to end the war in Ukraine, sparking hope that he would use aid as leverage to facilitate negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.
In an unusual critique of Putin, Trump remarked that the Russian leader’s failure to reach a deal was detrimental to Russia itself. He also noted that Ukrainian President Zelensky had expressed his eagerness to reach a peace agreement to end the conflict.
