Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old Ivy League grad, has pleaded not guilty to 11 state charges, including first-degree murder, 2nd-degree murder as a crime of terrorism, and multiple weapons charges. This comes after he was accused of slaying Unitedhealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last month as he entered the midtown Hilton hotel. Mangione, dressed in a maroon sweater over a white collared shirt and khaki pants, stood before the judge with his attorneys Karen and Marc Agnifilo.
If convicted, Mangione faces the possibility of life in prison without parole. This was his second time entering not guilty pleas, as he appeared in federal court last week to face charges that could result in the death penalty. The state’s case is said to take precedence over the federal trial.
After allegedly murdering Thompson, Mangione fled the crime scene by bicycle and managed to evade authorities for several days. He was eventually arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a patron recognized him from widely distributed suspect photos and called the police.
During the investigation, authorities found a diary believed to belong to Mangione, which indicated that he had planned the attack for a long time and expressed his distrust of the American corporate system. Currently held in MDC Brooklyn while awaiting trial, Mangione’s lead attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has declined to comment on the case.
The case has garnered significant media attention, with Mangione’s actions sparking a manhunt and raising questions about the motives behind the alleged murder. As the legal proceedings unfold, the public remains curious about the outcome of this high-profile case.
